Well, it's time to see how the zimmerit holds up under some paint. The model was airbrushed with my idea of German armor yellow, mixed with my usual choices of ceramic paints and Animator's paints. After the base coat, the model was sealed with an aerosol spray of Krylon clear gloss. This was an experiment to see how the paper would react, to make it a little easier for some stains of Pollyscale Roof Brown to flow and to see how much paint it would take to start filling in the etched relief on the paper.

Though none of these photos are of the best quality, you can see a little bit of forced shadow created by the dark brown stain. Especially on the roadwheels. You can also see where I slightly damaged the gun cleaning tube and side skirt rails. I filed the kit molded side skirt hangers to give them a little bit more interesting shape, implying a bit better detail. You can also barely make out the replaced grab handles on the hatches.

The next two photos show the camouflage colors. These colors were hand painted with a soft brush to see how well I could blend the paint on the paper. I tried to treat the application like a watercolor project with diluted color and a small pump bottle mister to allow the paint to flow and blend.

A certain amout of light scrubbing and drying with a hair dryer helped the colors to obtain soft edges and start to look as though they were sprayed on. The model got sprayed again with an aerosol clear matte finish to see if the colors would shift and to act as a barrier for some more weathering washes. The colors all look too bright at this stage and the subsequent layers of paint will be the key to getting the scale look.
