The idea of a GI with a German helmet, a souvenir, is intriguing to me. A tangible piece of evidence from the warzone and an object that completely typifies the image of the enemy soldier.
Thousands were picked up and sent home and the collectibility has never waned in the more than half a century since the end of the war.

The connection of the figure with the signs really ties the whole scene together. Although the GI wouldn't be able to use the Italian postal system to ship his helmet home, the point is made. The German weapons repair sign might be a clue as to how the soldier came by the helmet. Many helmets were picked up at weapons/equipment collection points.

This helmet is typical of one used in Italy and other Mediterranean combat areas. Perhaps because of the perceived connection to the Afrika Korps, the tan, ochre, light brown camo paint has made these helmets highly sought after on the collector market. The GI had a good eye when he picked up this helmet.
