This photo shows the scene after priming with gray aerosol. This is the inexpensive brand of paint I get at Walmart. The pigment is very finely ground and it really takes a few coats to start to see some color. The important feature is that the final paint colors have something to stick to and that all the fine surface detail is not filled in.

Now the fun part of painting is starting. The photo shows the first pass at coloring the elements. Some of the paints I use are identifiable. I like the Grimy Black paint to use as a wash. It gives everything an instant "old" look and really helps to pick out details and force shadows. Also shown are some colored pencils I used on the cobblestones. Not a lot of money gets spent on paints and pencils and it is enjoyable to experiment with techniques.

This closer view shows a range of shades and colors on the cobblestones. I thinned some spackle and scrubbed it in between the cobblestones to create some grout. After I dried it with a small blow dryer, I was able to sand the surface of the stones back to almost white paper before painting started.
