The Kubelwagen is an ideal subject to test the process for a few reasons. There is a wealth of reference to draw upon as inspiration and example. The scale allows for a fairly quick build and provides enough surface area to have fun with the process. The shape of the body provides plenty of area to use the technique to good advantage. This is an excellent subject for practicing your airbrushing skills because of the easy build, good surface area and limitless color choices from all combat theatres.
The Kit:
The 1/24 scale Hasegawa kit seems to be an accurate and well detailed depiction. I built the kit without doing any kind of super detailing although I did enhance the canvas top with a little work along the edges and the addition of tie-down straps. I added a rack for a spare gas can and a final detail of a mirror from chrome acetate, cut with a paper punch. That is about all the extra work I undertook. These decisions were made after the model was built and painted and I took some time to scrutinize it.

The Figure:
The driver was modified by adding an impression of an overcoat, as would be required in a winter setting. I didn’t sculpt the whole coat as I assessed he wouldn’t be seen below the waist and I admit I’m very lazy when it comes to spending time on unseen work. His coat and upturned collar were made with APOXIE Sculpt. This is the first time I’ve used the product and I was very impressed with its properties and working time. It’s something I will certainly experiment further with.

Painting:
I primed the mostly built kit with dark gray aerosol that passes for my opinion of panzer gray. I dabbed gel in random shapes along some edges and high points as shown in the photos. Reference photos really help for this but you can also use your good judgment to ascertain areas of high wear and abuse.
The canvas cover was painted with an approximate olive color with some highlights and the same gel process was used on it.

I concentrated the gel on the high points of where the ribs would make the material fold.
