The first photo on this page shows the entire scene with a coat of gray primer and ready to paint. I still wasn't sure how I was going to complete the scene and tell a story at this point.

Backing up a little bit, this photo shows the rear of the scene before I decided to cut out the doorway to the shop. The different color pieces on the left are some dense foam scraps used to complete the base for the Street Scene facade.
Later on in the process, I decided to create a working light from a fixture I placed coming out from the wall above the rolled rugs. The small battery and wires fit in the middle of this backside. I rigged the light the same way as I describe in my article "The Appointed Hour".

The next photo on this page shows the start of the painting process. I started with the small middle door as a test to establish a palette of colors. I knew I wanted the street color to be different from the walls but I also wanted the elements to relate and blend together somewhat.

The last photo on this page shows a lot of the painting complete and indicates that I still didn't know what vehicle I needed to complete the scene. I placed the little truck to get a feel for color and scale. It was a pretty good fit but I wasn't convinced it was the best choice to complete a scene around.
