In the second part of the article, we can focus on photos of the completed vignette and talk a little about some of the details.
This page has some overall photos of the whole scene although I admit I need to do better with my depth of field focus.

The story being told by the vignette is somewhat timeless and probably universal in that the exploring couple is lost and while the man pours over the map of Afghanistan, without any hope of locating this village or mountain road, the woman wants to just keep things simple and ask the shopkeeper for directions to their next stop. I suppose the time frame is around 1960, which would allow for some miles and wear on the Volkswagen.

The graphic clues were very important in conveying the setting and I wanted to make the scene look cluttererd and colorful.
The farsi words were applied to the store front, the staircase and the front wall. The idea of a "General Store" offering among other things, fruits and especially bananas, was reinforced with the wall graphic and paper images.

Besides selling bananas, the shop offers melons, fire wood, rugs and other commodities such as cigarettes, spices, coffee, perfume and other fruits, most notably apples and oranges which have images to accomodate the illiterate as well as non farsi speaking customers. This is by no means however, a tourist stop.
